We’re going to be building a side extension. This means our existing WC will lose its window and become ‘land locked’. We won’t have a moisture problem but we do need ventilation for smells. Running pipework is possible a bit of a PITA. Does anyone know of a clever bit of tech that would allow us to deal with the smells but avoid running many meters of pipework through the house?

Use a recirculating kitchen cooker hood. That will take out the odours.
Might need something else to comply with the building regs though.

Well it seems fair to say the Pistonheads brain boxes have got this one cracked. I’ll get an extractor and work on the pipe routing. Thank you. I think.

Some bogs in Japan are vented via the pan, no idea where it's vented too though.

ETA Google Panfan.

A serious answer for you.

Don’t buy a cheap fan from B&Q or similar. A cheap axial fan won’t have the pressure development to overcome the inevitable ductwork.

You want either a centrifugal or mixed flow fan.

You can have it come on with the light switch for simplicity.

To be compliant it will need at least a 15 minute run on timer.

I don’t want to fall foul of PH rules so won’t mention the company I work for that produces what you might need.

However I can sort out “mates rates” for such things. If you PM me I’d be happy to help out.

Hopefully that’s a little bit more helpful.

Thanks. I’m not fitting any bargain stuff. It seldom works and often fails too quickly. I’m going to try and find out if that Gebrit odour remover will meet building regs requirements. It’s just a loo so no humidity issues. Also starting to look at that Japanese thingy but I bet it’s super expensive. Thanks everyone.

Update. The geberit duofresh won’t meet building regs because it recirculates air rather than removing it. A bit annoying but there you go. A quality fan looks to be the only option. I’ll be in touch with the earlier poster who had a recommendation.

I’m surprised that building control will let you lose natural light into a space, but you absolutely need to meet the mandatory (in all honesty they are the practical minimum) air change rates. Advice above on proper fans is sound, you can use flat PVC ductwork to get to atmosphere.
