Does anyone know how I can I control plug-in 240v lights (such as LED's under shelves) from the ordinary main light switch in a room please?

I know you can get all kinds of wifi gadgets that can attach to the wires in the back-box of light switches and sockets, but I really don't know where to start with it all!

Essentially, I would like a plug socket, or a wifi plug in that socket, to be switched to live when the room slight switch is turned on, and backlight off again when the room light switch is off.

Any advice would be useful thanks.

A simple alternative would be an Anazon Echo device synced with a smart plug adapter, and name the adapter plug accordingly..

Alexa, turn on shelf lights
Alexa, turn off shelf lights

I have one for turning on Xmas tree lights etc, you can keep renaming them depending on what you re plugging into it. You can have multi smart plugs around the house to turn on/off other things by voice and can also sync Alexa compatible light bulbs etc to the Echo device

What is the room light switch turning on as well as triggering the LED lights? Is it a set of down lighters or a single pendant lamp or nothing?

Shelly stuff can almost certainly be configured to do what you want.

Alternatively just have an extra light switch stuck to the wall (battery powered). I did similar with the Hue lights in one room and it doesn't look too gash.

You're going to need wiring changes regardless...either with a lot of faff (re-cabling) or less faff (wifi related stuff).

Not a recommendation as such, but I use Lightwave kit. I replaced the main switch with one of their units (simple enough to do - straight replacement), then added their wifi plug in sockets.

You can then very easily link them to turn them all on/off/dim etc from the main switch. Or control them individually at the switch and have the lot come on/off/etc using a remote or phone app.

It's decent stuff. Though other brands are available.

The room light switch is turning on a set of ordinary ceiling mounted LED downlighters (The room is a garage).

I was chatting to a friend who is a builder, and he recommended using Sonoff stuff for this type of thing. My googling has led me to believe that I can put a Sonoff Mini R4 into the light switch back box, and then this will trigger a smart socket on and off with the lightswitch.

But I have never used these things before and don't know if there are any other alternatives, or if they are good/bad.
