Have you got any meter readings or do you know how much you use per year? You'll need some information to be able to work out if another supplier is cheaper.

Good, so work out how much you used in a year & enter numbers into here - you'll get an estimate for the fixed & flexible tarrifs & you will know if BG are competitive or not. It can get a bit more complicated if you have Smart meters as there are more options.

Sticks.

I used to pay BG by DD but when I checked i was hugely in credit. Online only allowed me to increase it and the queue for the online chat was @ 340.

Not BG but when I looked at paying for water by DD the amount they suggested would've meant I'd pay double next year what I paid last year.

If you can access your BG account online it's fairly clear.

In my experience issues like this are caused by people being forced to use monthly direct debit budget accounts where a regular amount is taken each month.

Month on month no one knows exactly how much water, gas, electricity they are using.

The complaints are that "my bill went from £X to £XXX" but the reality is that the billing is catching up with previous underpayments and it just makes it harder to know what is your consumption.

It would be so much better for many people if they were billed monthly for their actual use in the month. So what if you pay more in winter as at least you can get an appreciation of how much utility you are actually consuming.

Anyone who needs a budget account should be able to request one.

Budget accounts coupled with the so called energy price cap and no can know if they are coming or going.

Why not just put the figures into a comparison site. If op knows exactly how much using per year it's the simplest way.

Then if a switch is suggested do it then monitor the account monthly, probably via an app. If you've gone for a regular direct debit for ease of simplicity pick a regular point in each month, track use cost, pay.ents and account credit or surplus position. Soon get a feel for position.

I use the money saving expert comparison facility.
