Has the title suggests we are looking for a small 2 seater (no wider than 150cm) modern sofa and not the boxy/blocky type.
Looked at all the main retail sites and nothing doing. Lots of retailers we have never heard of any recommendations.
Oh and not to pricey but good quality

Here you go. It'll be decent from Next, and cheap.

If you want a known retailer, then Argos/Habitat have loads.

Why not go bespoke? We had a couple of sofas made by a local company - the exact size and style we wanted for around the same price as getting off-the-peg from somewhere like John Lewis.

Something along those lines, it’s in a lot of retailers and Dunelm it’s cheaper where I saw it online but not a fan of the colour want something warm colourful or vibrant

Not worth 2/3 X the price of similar products, think this is another that is sold at different retailers for various prices.
John Lewis often margin up products available elsewhere because they are JL , for instance recently brought a rug for half the £800 price tag of JL at local independent store.

I’m looking for a corner sofa at the moment, there is a huge difference in prices, is there an easy way to tell what is quality / long lasting (I’ve bought Timothy Oulton 2nd hand which seems decent, but I don’t think I’d be paying new prices)?

My first thought was M&S, as I recalled seeing exactly what you were describing in store a few years back, when I was looking for a sofa.

Checked their website and, right enough, most of the sofas are those oversized numbers, even the 2 seaters. In addition, the colours available are generously described as "muted".

Anyway, after some digging, something like this?

Edit: direct link to 2 seater.

Ercol make some very nice slim-armed and narrow sofas. Pricy, but you will never buy another sofa again. Mine were from thier outlet shop.

They’re not cheap but after two days or sofa searching for my last house (which was small), Bailey was the best combination of looks, sofa spare (I.e. not huge arms) and quality. I had three in an expensive leather from JL and then have since bought several more from JL returns over the years for my more recent and larger house. You can get some real bargains.

We had a John Lewis Arlo (154 wide) which has been good and still looks pretty much new after a clean.

The problem with the above suggestions from M&S and JL you can find pretty much the same if not the same sofas from a different retailer a lot cheaper and all packaged from China
Our current large 2 seater sofa is a Parker Knoll from the Devonshire range with chenille fabric which is over 8 years old and still looks like new, and back then only cost £1100 with covers/filling of choice, now it will cost you £1800, so I am all for quality but some of the expensive stuff out there is not quality.
We are looking for a small 2 seater to complement it instead of the couple of tub chairs we have. After some thought we may go down the small 2 seater of what we have although it will cost £1600 because paying a grand for something coming out of China doesn’t appeal but I don’t have a problem in the £400/500 mark

Yep nice but very pricey but if you can get what you want from an outlet at half the price then I can see the appeal

We have a local independent department store, got some lovely sofas that we couldn't find anywhere else.
