I am about to move house & will have quite a bit of plasterboard coving to put up.

Historically, I have used all sorts over the years (tile adhesive, no nails, finish palster) but as I have quite a bit of board finish left over from a recent plaster repair, I thought I would ask is this generally OK, or should I be investing in something else?

Cheap tile adhesive works better than the correct stuff by miles.

ETA.
I suppose it is helpful if whatever is used "grabs" quickly.

If you have loads to do a 25kg bag of drywall adhesive will do it quite cheaply.

I’ve just fitted some of that foam stuff, I wasn't convinced at first but it looks really good, easy to cut and handle, I used coving adhesive from Toolstation, its just like a tube of caulk or liquid nails. For yours I’d probably use Gyproc use dry wall adhesive.

Use cove adhesive as that’s what it’s designed for and you will be able to get a perfect finish on the top and bottom joint as you put it up and are cleaning down.
I’ve literally put thousands of metres up over a 50 year period and the vast majority has been put up with gyproc adhesive..

Plaster. You can use a few tacks to hold it up

Having fitted plaster coving with coving adhesive - not easy - I thoroughly recommend using lightweight coving which weighs very little and can be stuck in place with No More Nails etc.

I’ve done many many rooms with various forms of coving over the years.

For blue eagle style curved coving (paper wrapped plaster) I’ve used coving adhesive. Score the back of the coving, apply adhesive (not too wet), hold up sgainst ceiling until it’s grabbed, use a square edge to clean up anything that squidged out, job done. You MUST clean up any excess adhesive while wet (damp cloth), it goes off rock hard.

Real horsehair/plaster cornice is a much more authentic finish for period properties, they tend to come with their own adhesive.
