Just as the weather has changed our underfloor heating started doing something odd the other day, clicking on and off as it tried to chase a temperature and I realised the controller was set to a weird user-specific program, either I or my heat-sensitive other half probably messed with it and forgot.

I sorted that out and switched back to a simple morning/lunchtime/evening setup and now it's working fine, no clicking on and off and comfortable temperature in the room.

But, then I thought, I have the boiler serviced every year (cough), but the underfloor setup has been installed since 2014 and I paid someone to do it, it's not something I've ever touched or thought much about. I've never done any kind of maintenance on it.

So question is, should I have been doing some kind of maintenance on it?

Some pictures. The main setup:

The pump. From what I've read, these fail with very little provocation so I tried not to look at it. The little gauge underneath will be important later.

Mysterious box. What is this for.

These look important, and like the little red indicators should be checked, and that one of them shouldn't be cloudy.

I'm just a bit concerned that this gauge appears to max out when the system is firing.

When it's not trying to hit a temperature, the gauge is much lower.

I realised with some shame that I have zero clue about what any of the stuff in this little cupboard does, and I've just expected it to work without issue for 12 years, which in fairness it has. Is there a maintenance expectation with this sort of setup? Should the gauge under the pump be maxing out like that? What are the little red tubes for, and why is one of them cloudy?

If this stops working one day, I will hear about it. Ideally it would be moved onto some kind of nest or hive controller but before that I want to make sure all the actual hardware is in good shape. A few things in there make me wonder if it is. Or, are these things bulletproof and I shouldn't worry?

I've just noticed that the gauge is temperature in celsius, and when maxing out it's just over 60 degrees, which feels like a standard sort of temperature for underfloor heating. So I'm slightly less worried that it's about to explode in my face.

I thought underfloor heating ran much lower temps than that.

Ours is designed to run at 55C input, so not necessarily.

That said, there is a mixing loop with a thermostat on it (shown clearly in the first photo), so the OP could turn that stat down to reduce the input temperature if required.

The mystery box is just a zone valve isn't it ?

I try never to look at our LPG equivalent sh*tload of UFH matrix gubbins as I have no clue what any of it does, the glass valves are not as clear as they probably should be and the bank of constantly flashing LEDs scares me. Currently trying to establish a baseline temp without bankrupting the household.
