So I have been in touch with Bosch Home Appliances UK about sourcing a drum spider. (aluminium propellor which is bolted on to the drum and has the the spindle so that it can be attached to the flywheel and motor). The spider and drum are then encased in the tub to make it water tight.

They won't sell me just the spider. I have to purchase drum and two part tub - damage £850.
Bosch themselves have confessed that the complete unit has been sitting on their shelves for 17 years so they have stock.
Can't convince them that £850 is just a joke price as well as the fact that I'm probably the only person in the UK running these washing machines.

I'm like a dog with a bone since I invested in two of these machines and I think that they are the bees knees.

How can I convince Bosch to do the right thing?

failing this I'm going to search out a mid sized engineering company.

Can't help I'm afraid but stories like this remind me of the time I was standing in a store seeking a replacement part for my boiler.

The part itself was barely more than a metal tube with some bits welded to it. But it was a really odd diameter and difficult to fabricate.

In this case the spare part was available but it was an absolutely ludicrous price for what it was. I can't remember the exact details now but it was probably 10 times what I expected it to cost.

I remonstrated with the salesman and I have never forgotten this response.

"I know, but that's where they've got you you see"!!

The phrase became planted in my brain and is now a common part of my vocabulary whenever I'm completely stuffed on something like you seem to be.

The same thing happened with my Siemens WM a year ago. Chap came to fix it, found a fractured spider, checked and found it was only available with a new drum at a price which was a non-starter. As it was 9 years old I replaced it with a new Bosch. And that's probably why they do it that way - they sell more machines.

Off topic, our 3 month old £900 Samsung washing machine had a bearing go, John lewis didn't want to know and referred us to Samsung themselves (utterly hopeless).

After 2 engineer visits, a 2 month wait for parts only to be told it's scrap and they'll do a like for like exchange, except the replacement was black and not white...

And the Samsung replaced a Miele that died at only 5 years old.

What is up with modern white goods?!

Have you seen the YT channel for this engineer who has been fighting a campaign about what he considers the built in obsolescence of washing machines - particularly Bosch ones.............

https://youtu.be/j0YU2wvVJ94

Stripping a Bosch model for spares here........

https://youtu.be/qvpWn87UDbY

He might sell the part you need as he strips them and sells spares on his website.

Just thinking out loud, can you possibly do 'a Mat Armstrong' on it and source a spider from a different model / manufacturer? I'm sure there will be many similarities across the board, don't know how difficult / safe they would be to modify if you really have a bee in your bonnet and want to stick it to the man.

Repair yours using a local engineering firm (for less than £850).

I had similar albeit with a Bosch dishwasher, broke down three times, the last just outside warranty and the parts cost was extortionate, almost as much as a new dishwasher.

I replaced it with a new washing up bowl, a new kettle, and a bottle of Fairy Liquid and have saved hundreds if not thousands of £'s over the last 15 years.

I've got nothing but contempt for Bosch these days.

Their downfall should be studied, living on past glories.

I'd rather buy a Chinese brand I've never heard of than any Bosch appliance these days.

Have you checked whether the part or equivalent is available from somewhere like www.buyspares.co.uk?

A quick search shows this drum spider for Bosch machines (obviously I don't know which model you have).

I’ll be amazed if it’s still sitting there after 17 yrs - it’s probably long been chucked out but not been taken off the computer.

You could try contacting the consumer help page of one of the newspapers - a bit of press attention and, if it is still there, they might give it you.

In our experience we've never bought high end but also avoided likes of Beko and done pretty well. We're farmers so they see real dirt and constant use, never had a failure where I've felt unjust. I don't pay for extra warranty etc

100% to sell more machines, although as you demonstrated you went and bought a different brand. If they keep doing it eventually people would stop buying that brand as they know that they are designed to be replaced not repaired.

thanks for this - it seems to be a duplicate of the Bosch Spares Website with a little bit of fat added to the price.
gave them a quick ring but no they wont sell the spider.

Alternatively, scour facebook market for a donor machine.

Ah didn't know that. Could have bought a brand outside of the group though. It's like if VW started becoming unreliable people would stop buying Skoda and Seat as they are basically the same and go to Ford or Vauxhall.
