After a home safe, it's to store watches and jewellery in. Seems there's quite a variety, was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. After something professionally installed.

Budget might help but if you want something High end then Banham would be a decent place to start.

Be careful of 'professionally installed'.

I paid for that, and it was basically a couple of guys more familiar with stuff like washing machine installation. It was awful and not remotely secure - I did it myself after they left.

Safes are classified according to a "cash rating", higher the rating, the tougher the safe is to get into. Might be worth asking your insurer what sort of cash rating they would recommend for the specific valuables you want to put in there.

Far cheaper to just dominate the stairs.

In my last house I fitted a waterproof safe (I thought would be better if I ever had the misfortune to need the fire service to hose down the house) but it had no ventilation and can cause problems with watches and possibly jewellery, and after a while stored papers acquired a musty smell.

I am not sure it's really worth having a normal domestic jewellery safe 'professionally installed' as it's so easy to do yourself.

Where you put it is obviously critical - against a solid brick wall and preferably not on display.

A decent drill and some carriage bolts, normally 4 in the back and even some on the bottom plate if it's on the floor.

You can buy a fairly decent safe for £100 or so, as above the 'cash rating' will determine how much you pay.

I posted the same question a few months ago.

I eventually bought something like this (sorry I can't remember the exact make and model)

As NDA mentions above it's fairly easy to self-install if you're even a semi-competent DIY'er (I'm not, i got my brother to do it for me). It's installed at the back of the workshop next to the garage (drilled into the floor). The logic being that there's so much clutter in the workshop it's going to be very hard for anybody to find (let alone open) if somebody breaks in while we're out .
