Has anyone got any experience with this gen of Tado smart heating? I know they're a controversial brand, flip flopping features behind pay walls and not. More recently they put the ability for smart TRVs to call for heat behind a pay wall, then backtracked on it when everyone kicked off.
For £30 a year you get the 'AI' features such as geofencing, open window detection and some other AI assisted features. As a basic smart heating system though, is it reliable and decent enough?

if they're matter enabled you can easily drop home assistant on raspberry pi or similar and let it handle all that. For free. Completely bypassing their rubbish subscription. I have their thermostat, works well. No issues to report.

I don't have Tado X but I have been running Tado V3+ for 3 years and it is OK but I would not recommend or use them again.

I don't mind paying a subscription but my main concern is that all the comms between the smart TRV's and the controller is using the cloud and there is very little functionality when the Internet is down. I believe that Tado X is the same.

I was also annoyed that Tado X came out so soon after I invested in Tado V3+ which is presumably heading for obsolescence.

I had regular Tado and it was good but the comms between the boiler and the controllers was not solid enough despite being in a relatively small property. Now have honeywell evo home which seems pretty solid albeit not so rich in features.

I invested in Tado X after Google end-of-life'd my Nest.

It does feel a bit of a step backwards from a industrial design point of view, and there's no getting away from it, the upsell to their subscription is annoying (I don't want AI running my heating, f**k off!).

Having said that, it does seem fairly well engineered - haven't encountered any reliability issues to date. And, upselling aside, the app does everything I need to and is pretty intuitive. I could explore using HA instead but don't feel a great need to at the moment. The zonal control via TRVs is also a big step up from the Next.

Expensive, but I got a good discount via Google. Octopus also provide a discount code for customers.
