We have dect phones at home ( currently 4 ) and I added another handset last night and now only 2 seem to work. The line has one base station and one fax machine on it.
What is the maximum amount of handsets you can have on one line? ( with broadband set up on the same line )

Usually 4 I think - see 'REN number' in the manual.

And is a base with 3 other satellite handsets classed as 1 or 4 ren?

Only phones or base units physically plugged in the the line add there REN value to the total. An additional handset on the same base unit does not count. The number of handsets supported by a base unit varies with make and model. Check your handbook if you still have it. It's also possible that when registering the new one you mucked up the others. Try starting from scratch.
