I take it this is now the gardening forum under 'Homes'?

Anyway

I have a hosepipe. I have a tap in my garden.

Tap is like this: but it is NOT threaded (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/251749/2/istockphoto_251749_garden_tap.jpg)

Therefore I bought one of these to attach to the tap. It fits the tap perfectly
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detai...

I then attached one of these to the hose on both ends
http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servle...

When I connect them 2 bits together they fit together but water leaks out between them... am i I doing it right?

I spose even if I had a threaded tap I would use one of these connectors, but I would still get a leak because they conenct in the same way??

On the other end of the hose I have another one of the things above attached to one end of the hose and a spray gun (both of those are the cheap Homebase ones and work fine).

yes it does

when the 2 connectors click into place there is some 'wobble' but only a little

They do wobble and dribble - it's just a crap overpriced design from Hozelock.

All you need is a jubilee clip. Push the naked end of the hose over the outlet of the tap (you may need to soften it in hot/boiling water first)(the hose not the tap) then tighten the clip up. Sorted!

The tap doesn't have a fitting on it that screws off to reveal the thread does it? Quite a lot of outdoor taps come with a spout bit that just screws off.

Cheers, At first I did wonder if there was a way of connecting the hose directly to the bit on the tap.

I am surprise Hozelock sell the product if it actually always leaks...

Does it leak even when there's water flowing out of the end of the hose? If you open the tap and you've got good flow/pressure and then you block off the end of the hose then it may well leak. However I have a similar set up (although I do have the bit the screws onto the tap, but as you say, that shouldn't make any difference) and it doesn't leak, even with the end of hose connector being a waterstop one, so the hose is under pressure.

Try swapping the end connectors around and see it that's any better. Failing that, try a new tap connector, or an alternative way of connecting the hose to the tap.

I have a spray gun on the other end, so MOST of the time the spray gun is off, so there will be pressure there

I will have a look at connecting the 'raw' hose end to that tap fitting that connect directly to the tap -that is how I thought it was meant to be as our ancient 10 year old hose only has that 1 fitting which directly connects to the tap... but the connector on the end is a bit too thick to fit into the hose - as the other poster says, i may be able to squeeze it in and then use a clip.

i.e this bit directly into the hose http://www.philipmorris.uk.com/images/db/i43ff28ba...

That still leaves the Hozelock wobble though. Is your tap like this:

Plastic quick connects.....
Try taking the weight of the hose off the fitting and see if it stops leaking.
Is that understandable?
Add a six inch hose extension above the quick connect so it is not being pulled at an angle.

You could try a little silicon grease on the O ring, but basically it is plastic.

The brass ones will last for years, although if the get a lot of use you do have to change the O ring which sits in a groove in the female part.
Similar to air hose connecters but with no shut off.

Overpriced, certainly - but I've never had a leak and I've joined dozens of fittings in various states of decrepitude over the years. Is it definitely Hozelock and not a copy?

That still leaves the Hozelock wobble though. Is your tap like this:

If it is like that he can unscrew the spout bit (for the sake of a better word!), which will reveal a thread. Hozelock then do a connector which screws on to the connecter.

On that tap the wide Knarled bit is actually a nut and undoes, and doing that makes live a lot easier.

Most Hozelock kits start leaking after a while, but thats because the "O" rings perish. New "O" rings can be purchased cheaply on Ebay!

Cut out the middleman - simply push the naked hose end onto the tap and secure with a jubilee clip. Then you don't need to go and buy any extra widgets from Hozelock at all.
