When flushing my loo the incoming water it sounds like its reverberating down the pipes.

If I turn the water off at the isolation valve there is no noise when I flush.

If I then turn it on, the cistern fills normally.

But flush with the water turn on leads to a tremendous reverberation.

So what do I need to change ?

Thanks

I was pissing by the door when I heard two sts.

Could be water hammer.

Are all the pipes clipped firmly to the walls?

Is it a constant vibration or is it a sudden bang once the cistern is full?

Hi,

Nieither...

When you flush, it immediately reverberates the cold water feed for anything from 2 to 4 seconds - its not water hammer (I get that on the cold tap if I turn my pressure up) its more of a loud resonant hum.

I've tried setting the isolation valve to slow the refill and it makes no difference (unless its turned completely off)

There's not much in a cistern - just change it all.

Ah but I was told it could somehow be the fault of the isolation valve ?

This is a modern 'dual flush' type if that makes a difference.

Hard to know how an isolation valve could cause any issue - is it just one of those in-line ones with a screwdriver slot to twist open or closed?

Are you on mains or a tank?

If you're on a tank, is the sound coming from the loft (your cold water storage) ball valve?

mechsympathy - not allowed to say ballcock anymore!

Mains.

Stuff it... the kids have flushed it 4 times this morning I'll just change the lot in the cistern but I really can't see how it is making the cold feed reverberate.

Just had the ballcock changed on my hot water tank and it now does this. You don't have a plastic pipe feeding it do you? The plumber told me that some ballcocks vibrate when they are just at the point of shutting off and this can cause plastic pipes to be noisy if they are not firmly secured.

Guess what mine has started doing now since the ballcock was replaced....

Inlet valve... that makes sense... as the noise is clearly on the inlet side.

Can you by them seperately ?

Ah....

Ballcock, ball valve and inlet valve are all the same thing fro what I can see.

Mine is a bottom entry - oh er !

It seems I can have a ball valve for £4 or a Torbeck valve for £10 from Screwfix.

Is the Torbeck quieter ?

Cheers
