Are these people any good?

I have 2 bathrooms to refurbish - but some fairly serious electrical work needs to be done too in order to put in whirlpool baths and underfloor heating. At least a new fusebox - possibly even a rewiring of the house.

At the moment I have a local builder quoting, and I was going to design the bathrooms myself etc. However, how good are Dolphin when asked to do more than simply install stuff - and how expensive are they for slightly more bespoke building work such as running electrical supplies to the new bathrooms, and replacing an old water heater boiler?

Any experiences appreciated - query is from noticing their advertisements for a half priced sale at the moment...

STAY WELL AWAY FROM THEM!

I know I worked for them a few years back chasing around their numpty fitters
Removing the st they fitted and replacing it again with new kit, fitted properly.

They will charge you a fortune and customer service is wk.

Pm me if you want more info as to why not to choose them.

Give you work to a local chap someone you can rant at if it goes wrong wink

They give you the hard sell, quote a stupidly high price after spending all evening in your home, then when you really want to get rid of them and go to bed they'll quote a 10% discount for signing today.

Resist, and do your research on real prices the next day at leisure.

Thanks chaps - seems like I should stay away. My builder has quoted me a good price for doing the bathrooms, but I have to source all the bits (which shouldn't be too hard). And I know and trust him as he's just done our roof and the exterior to the building.

SO for the extra hassle of designing the bathroom and sourcing the suite/fittings myself, I guess having a trusted firm do the work is the way to go.

I think I should clarify that Bathstore offer a design service, not that their service is appauling - having read the thread through it does read that way.

If you're going to supply the materials to the builder make sure it's what you ordered before the builder gets fitting. There was a guy last week who was ranting that the tiles they had ordered and then passed to the Tradesman to fit weren't the right ones - after 95% of them had been fitted.

What kind of price?

Do you have his details as I did get some quotes for redoing one bathroom and then I decided to change everything and forgo the bath for a walk in shower and now need a re quote.

Can he build glass block walls?

He can - but I'm not giving you his details until after he's finished my job!

Made that mistake before...

Quite a lot of bathroom shops have a free design service if you buy the bits off them.
thats what we have done and had the plumber fit them. the designer had much better ideas than I did and made a excellant job of the design. wish I could have had the designs before i built as knowing exactly where to put the soil pipes would have been much better than having to fit the design around the location of the soil.
have a look about Im sure there is one near to you, we used HS in M'boro

I used them in my previous place. I think they're average. Wouldn't use them again tbh because they charged more than rivals.

Don't they have the same parent company as Moben?
If they are, i would advised that you stay away from them.

Sightly O/T, but i had their [Moben] kitchen installed and i was promised a fitted (average size) kitchen within a 4 working days by about 3 guys.
All the stuff was delivered and on the day of the fitter turning up, no one was there.
It turned out that there was only one guy coming over and he had a cold; it eventually took him over a week to fit the kitchen and even then it look kak (i'm really not happy with the way it looks, espically as it's over £5K in cost).

I was also interested in buying a new bathroom, so looked at the promotion that Dolphin were offering at the Ideal Home Show. I didn't want the tiling/painting/flooring sorted, just to supply and fit a new bath/toilet/sink and taps. The bath room is less that 6Msq and they wanted £4K; i showed the guy the door.

From now on i will go to a local guy for work that needs to be done on the house, once I've seen the workmanship from a few references.

I used to work for the parent company of Moben and Dolphin doing all their advertising.

Sale must end soon? Yeah, right! And yes, some of the stories are absolutely horrific!

Find a good bathroom from somehwere like B&Q, Bathstore or any of the many other supply only places and use your local guy yes

Yes, their stuff is not even seconds, more like thirds or even fourths!

You get what you pay for, as with most things

Ditto.

I have no idea why (my dad's never been afraid of a bit of building / plumbing etc) but my parents had them in to do a bathroom.
The end result, whilst perfectly functional and inoffensive, is nothing to write home about. The cost, though, was astronomical.

Thanks guys.

So then, recommended suppliers for whirlpool and spa tubs that will work but won't break the bank (Therefore Jacuzzi are out - stupidly costly for the name), taps, loos and basins?

Stone tiles (with nifty fossils and all!) already sorted - samples arrived today and have made selection...
