Right then - i know that if a neighbours tree overhangs your property you can cut the branches off (and give them back), but what about a tree that is on public land / council land whatever it is.

Its growing right over my garden and is a bit of a pain.

Can i start lopping bits off it?

Ask the council. Don't do anything without asking. If it has a tree protection order on it you could get a big fine just for trimming it!

A small amount of research later and i find that its actually a local nature reserve.

Its Bowden Housteads Woods.

I assume the chances of getting the council to let me chop bits of a tree in a anture reserve are quite low?

Depends on whether you can demonstrate its blocking your light or is a danger to your property etc.....

First thing's first though, go & talk to them. Many trees benefit from a bit of maintenance/pruning so you may also be able to argue that it will be a better tree for it.
