am moving house in two weeks time - first time in about 5 years and the first proper 'house' move that the Mrs & I will be embarking upon.

Anyone got any advice or anecdotes?

am currently toying with the idea of an 'all inclusive' job from the movers where they literally pack everything (mrs is 7 month preggers & my work is proper busy right now, so tempted...

Also got a couple of Cats that I'm not sure what to do with - butter on the paws i've heard helps keep the from bu66ering off -

very excited!

pray, thats my advice.

Just kidding!

Just remember the deals not done until you're through the front door of your new house.

All inclusive saves you a whole heap of stressing, and will make the move substantially more pleasant for both of you.

Make sure you take an "immediate need" box or two with you in the car - kettle, biscuits etc to keep the moving chaps happy, and the jobs a good one.

Use the Post Office postal redirection for the first year - makes sure anything that a service like http://www.iammoving.com/ misses, takes a little hassle away. I'd consider leaving the banks out, and making sure that they get the letter ASAP (that way, you can continue doing the online shopping etc)

Lastly, completely empty the garage, then have a good long hard think about proper tiling, carpets etc for the car. It has got a garage, yes? biggrin

Post office need about 2 weeks notice for redirection. BT will cock up your phone line, expect it.

Cats have a habit of wandering off when there is alot of disruption - i.e. when you're packing or removal men are clearing the house.

Have you considerered putting the cats in a cattery for a week before you leave until a few days after you're in your new place. That way you won't have to worry about them.

Never tried the butter thing. Always just kept them in for a while and it seemed to work ok.

Good luck with the move and the baby on the way!!

Lots of labels so you know where the boxes go.

Tea and snacks box is a must, but remember to put mugs in.

Get someone to do it, just for moving sofa's (in and out) its worth it.

Leave cats to the last thing. Lock them in a cleared bedroom with litter tray, beds and blankets and cat boxes. Ditto when you get to new house. We didn't let ours out for about 2 weeks and after that we tried to keep them in the garden. Moving in the winter helped as they didn't want to be outside in the cold and wet. MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE THEIR CHIP INFO ASAP, because if they do wander off and are found they will be taken to the old address.

Good Luck.

PS have spare cash for a takeaway the night you move as you won't have the energy to do anything yourself.

Definitely pay them, I was amazed last time at how little extra the full Sservice packing and whatnot added to their prices, it was a godsend.

When we last moved it was also the first time I had had to do it as part of a chain. We were buying from a complete nutbag of a woman, referred to herself as a white witch and was just very peculiar. Ours funds transfer happened and we got the keys and proceeded to the house, only to find her still there with very little packed up and one small VW camper van being loaded with the first few boxes. She did not understand why she could not have access to two houses at the same time and simply wanted to spend the day ferrying small loads back and forth with her van owning hippy friend. Worse came when we went upstairs and found a suspicious looking sleeping bag and pillow in one of the bedrooms - she then went on to tell me that she'd just had a call, the whole chain had stalled and that no one was able to move so looked like she was there for the night but we could bunk down there too if we wanted too!!! I told her pretty sharpish that her forward chain might have stalled but her solicitor had our cash and this was now our house and she shouldn't be there at all; the problem therefore was between her, her solicitor and the house she was moving into. In the end we had to move (ourselves) most of her stuff into the garage so we could finally unload our van into the house - first thing to go was the sleeping bag. She didn't end up trying to stay over but did spend the next week or so gradually collecting her bits.... fun fun fun.

have just had another quote through -

basic move £500
packing materials (for self packing) £80 or
full packing service £150

total no brainer!

thanks for all the advice guys - with the cats - there is a room in the new house which is seperate from the main house that we can probably lock the cats in for the day - should keep them out of the way of all the noise & distress....

just the small matter of clearing out the loft now....

on that note - does anyone want about 50 copies of EVO magazine? (c. 70-132 with a few missing)

also got about 50 911 & Porsche Worlds - too good to send for recycling but i'll face the wrath of my missus if they make it to the new place... hehe

PM if anyone fancies picking them up.

As above, but also do not forget to let your insurance company know, for both House and Motor insurance.

we've just bought - having sold two years back and moved into a rental.

hopefully this next one will be a good 10 years or so as moving is a pain in the arse

really funny actually looking over this old thread - particularly the BT phone line comment - wont go into the detail but they F*cked up our phone, charged us £500 and took the best part of 18 months to repay it....
