I am doing the patio in my garden and I am thinking of what I will use for the bottom base.

I read Type 1 is the best. But I also have broken up concrete from the previous patio.

Is it OK to be re used it as hardcore? I have read some sites that suggest it is just better to get in proper smaller rubble like type 1. The 'problem' is that a lot of my old rubble is big - bigger than an avg brick, whereas some of it is small.

Should harcore bases generally be smallish rubble or will the odd larger block do as long as its compacted properly?

I also have some standard driveway blocks that are in 'normal condition' - can i chuck them in, or will they be too big?

Your best bet is to just use the type 1.

The smaller it is, the better it will compact, the more compact it is the better. Putting the bigger stuff in will create pockets/gaps that might later on cause some movement.

You can probably get away with the small stuff, but the brick sized stuff would probably be too much.

It probably won't do a huge amount of harm putting it in, I'm just thinking - better to be safe than sorry, sorta thing.

It depends on the depth you are preparing. If you have a foot or so to make up, chuck the big stuff in and make up (a few inches at a time) with type 1. If you are making up 4 inches or so, the normal base thickness, unless you can crush the big stuff down, just use the type 1. If you try to make up too much depth at a time, your average Wacker plate won't compact it enough, and you'll get settlement later on.

Take a hammer to it and break it up smaller.
