Wireless home automation - any experience?
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm looking for some practical experience with wireless home automation. Briefly, this uses either the power lines themselves, or a separate wireless system, to control lights and appliances via either plug-in type recievers or micro receivers built into power sockets. A well known system is the X10 system, e.g. Marmitek (dunno whether that's also the brand name in the UK). It isn't so expensive and a lot of variety of switches, dimmers etc. is available BUT it is slow, sucsceptible to interference, not very reliable over longer distances and unidirectional, e.g. you can't query the status of a switch.
Alternatives are available but experience a bit scant... the z-wave system seems interesting and more reliable but there is not so much available and it certainly isn't free of problems.
I don't want wired solutions as I live in an oldish farmhouse and pulling an extra wire to each plug will take ages and cost an arm and a leg.
So, any experience with such systems within the great PH collective?
TIA
Maarten
