After several years good service, the missus plugged our Flymo Compact 330 hover mower in today and after approx 10 seconds, it cut out. Turned out to have blown the fuse in the extension lead, so I plugged it into another extension and the same thing happened again, but this time immediately.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this and whether its fixable? There are no obvious visible problems with it, but I haven't really invetigated in detail as it doesn't look as though it's easy (or even possible) to service or work on at home.

More than likely the connection where the cable goes into the mower, happened to ours a while back, the plastic on the connector box had worn through the insulation. Quite easy to redo.

Thanks for the replies. I've tried the spare lead, but still no joy, it just trips the ring main switch every time I turn it on. frown

Could also be Crud wrapper around the motor spindle. Give it a check over unplugged to see if the blade spins relatively freely.

It spins relatively freely, although with some resistance. Trouble is, I don't know how much resistance there was before... scratchchin However, the resistance is completely uniform as the blade turns, so I'm uessing it's normal.

OK if you take the blade off and then start under power does it still blow the fuse?

They're not too difficult to take apart. Usually just a section of frayed wire somewhere.

If it turns out the motor is knackered try Shoulders of Shoreham - off Trafalgar Street, Portslade actually, for a replacement part. Got mine there.

Well it seems like it's take it apart time, the motor spindle should not be that difficult to spin by hand if it doesn’t then it sounds like there is still something restricting the motor. You need to get at the motor to see what is causing the problem if any. And as already suggested look for bad connections / loose wires etc.
