Hi,

Can you fit these to work with any old ceiling light or do you need a special light?

Thanks

incandescent lamp - yes
fluorescent lamp - no
extra low voltage - maybe

also check that the dimmer doesn't need a neutral

A 40 watt candle lamp is incandescent - the dimmer must be rated for 200+ watts.

Should be ok.

What's a neutral? (Direct line to Switzerland?)

Ah ok.

For AC current:

Live = flow
Neutral = return

Ah!

Thanks.

Should have known that. Always thought of it as 'return' and not 'neutral'.

ETA: Thanks.

In a balanced 3-phase AC system, there is no current in the neutral conductor (delta windings have no neutral). Single phase systems will always have current in the neutral conductor, the term has carried across.

Thanks.

Of course, in an AC system then there is no such a thing as a 'return' either, as this implies one-way flow ...
