Hi all,

I like in a new build house which has spring loaded doors on the entry to most of the rooms. The closing mechanism which sits half way down the edge of the door (where the hinges would go) and attach to the door frame (again where the hinge goes). It's one of the bike-chain style ones.

Is there any way of adjusting these? One door is nice and damped, however the remaining ones slam shut and it's driving me mad!

Many thanks in advance,

Nick

I think you will find they are adjustable. There is a shim that one can slide over the chain/linkage to stop it springing shut, then undo the frame side and then turn to adjust.

Or you could remove them completely. Nothing but a PITA if you ask me.

I had these in my house, even at their weekest setting they still slam shut, and if you have a window open then they are liable to decapitate you if you arn't looking.

Easiest way to get rid is to open the door as wide as possible and unscrew the 4 screws that attach them to the door, 30 second job, then you can always refit them if you feel you want them back on.

That's what i did with ours. If I want a door shut I'll shut it, and if I want it open i expect it to stay open and not slam shut of its own accord.

Much quiter life now with things not slamming all the time!

My house had these, something to do with fire regs. I removed them all because the constant slamming was very annoying.

I heard that the regs have recently been relaxed because of kids getting their fingers trapped in auto-closing doors.

yeah, they're suposed to be fire doors that close automatically to prevent the spread of fire. I still close my doors when I go to bed, but that's only to shut the cat in... any fire protection is a plus!

There was a requirement in the Building Regs for self-closing doors in domestic properties but it has recently been removed. There is no harm in removing the 'perco' closer.

If you choose to keep them then you can adjust them - do a websearch for the model number that is printed on the face plates. Simples.
