They are the original florboards which had been covered by carpet. When we moved in we weren't here when they replaced the carpets so didn't know what had been covered up. They all still had the original flat head nails but despite the 2007 floods which had got under the boards, they were in amazing condition. The company who did the floor had to replace about 1 sq meter with reclaimed boards because the old cellar entrance had been roughly boarded over with modern timber, and some boards against the gable wall which had got wet with the damp. They sanded them back, stained and varnished them.

Nice job!

Is that the only room you did?

How long did it take?

We did the whole house after the 2007 floods and this was the last one.

It took 2 days to take out the plaster, tank, board and skim (plasterer and labourer). Then a day or so to put in 10 new joist ends and new skirting boards (lone chippy) and to install the slate hearth. One day to install the fireplace, redecorate (2 decorators) and finally 2 days to replace trhe boards and do the floors (3 blokes).

Of course those 6 days have taken 3 weeks!

And of course the ones who don't turn up when you have a date booked and then say you never called to confirm the booking. The ones who turn up without the tools/materials or who claim you didn't say you wanted X, Y or Z and they will have to come back.

Don't start me on the 12 month nightmare which was our flood repairs....

Funnily enough it sounds similar to our story too.

Lovely floor, we recently stripped ours back and revarnished. Hidden under hideous carpets because they were on the surface 'ruined' with old stains, paint etc. A weekend with an industrial floor sander has got them looking great again.

Was also a nice surprise for us to find they were near enough originals smile

Where did you get your fire from? We need one for the bedroom. Ebay seems to be pretty good, but there is a lack of local supply it seems.

The fire suround and hearth came from these guys, who made it to our spec at no extra cost;

http://www.marblegranitecraftsmen.com/ They are Italians ( Naples) and sell on Ebay but also supply to some of the better known fireplace specialists. Alberto's English isn't great but the quality and the service is excellent and the decorator got a hernia moving it into place. I think with the slate hearth and delivery from London to Yorkshire (which Alberto and his mate did themselves)it was £560. The insert came from Ebay from a woman in kent who specialises (used to have shops in London) but I also found these people had some good stock;

Love that fireplace!

Was £560 to supply, deliver and fix it? That seems very reasonable if it was.

The cost was about £399, the hearth was about £80 and delivery of both to Yorkshire was £80. They do fit for about £200 but I wasn't that organised and mine was not a full fit anyway. As the fireplace is only decorative (my chimney cannot accommodate a real fire and we don't need extra heating in that room) it is fixed with brackets into the plaster and with some 2-part stone based glue Alberto gave me.

"If you live within 60 miles of London we can fit your fireplace surround for you at a charge of £200. This is because you are buying the fireplace surround from us as well. We normally charge £350.

The way we fit the fireplace surround is professional and according to all the regulations. We don’t just do a simple fitting (screw the fireplace surround to the wall), we insert the fireplace surround into the wall for about half an inch. This prevents any smoke leaks. According to the regulations this makes it suitable for real fire, gas fire and wood burning stove. If necessary we can fit your insert for you as well. Also if necessary we can line up the gas pipes underneath the hearth for you ready for gas fitting."

Ahh!

Their prices don't seem too bad!

I think I know the type of glue you are on about. It's very strong stuff biggrin

I like proper fireplaces. Can't stand all the modern crap you get in B&Q etc.
