As I am not a member on BedHeads or MattressStation thought I would ask on here.

Wife and I have started getting a bad back probably due to uncomfortable sleeping - have a John Lewis bedframe (standard double) with one of their own mattress' (about £250 each part 3 years ago). Want a new mattress as this should help our back pain.

Current bedroom is not big enough to get a bigger frame - so only want a replacement mattress to put on this frame for the time being, as when we move we will likely get a king sized bed with a Tempur mattress (been recommended many times but bed+foam = £2k+)

Would anyone be able to suggest a reasonable replacement double mattress - which in time would become our spare bed. Current mattress has lasted 3 years - is this normal for cheap ones ?

We got a Sleepeezee Baroness matress last year, about £300 online but a lot more in the shops. It's not bad at all, About 2000 springs and the cover is lambswool and silk as I remember. It should do until you get your new sponge bed smile

Still got the old double mattress with a John Lewis foam topper, it's only been on 1 year and it had already shrunk about 1 inch all round the bed.

I think time is up - new mattress or new king size bed !

Frame-type beds typically have more 'give' than divans. Have you tried putting some plywood between the frame and the mattress? I'd try 9mm ply, somewhere like B&Q or Homeabase will probably cut it to size (slightly smaller than the mattress) for you free of charge, although it's probably going to need to overlap in the middle a bit to avoid a valley. If you don't like it, it won't have cost you a lot of money. Or go and buy a Vi-Spring Super King Size, it costs the same as a small car but it's very very good.

I'd try changing your pillows first. Tempur neck pillows cost less than a mattress

The thing is that you don't know if a mattress is really comfortable or not until you've tried it. If you try it in a shop, then find it's no good, you're stuffed (more than the mattress!).

Bizarrely if you buy from Argos online, then because you could't try it first, you have up to 30 days to try it, and return/exchange it if not suitable - quibble free. Brilliant. Tesco Direct do a similar scheme.

Sadly my back is so sensitised by suffering too long with a Sleepmaster mattress (and their bent technician who couldn't see a 2" dip when it was pointed out to him) that I'm about to invest in a waterbed. And compared with a £2,000 Tempur, at £750-£1100 it's cheap!

I quite fancy a water bed , at the moment my biggest gripe is that I feel that I am sunk in the bed and find it hard to sit up and/or turn over - not sure a water bed would solve this.

I stayed somewhere recently that had a water bed. Once the novelty ends (about ten minutes) the reality sets in, they're awful.

Just ordered a Handmade Air Nest Elation, Made by Kaymed in ireland.

very nice smile but a little pricey.

It has 2000 Pocket springs with a fancy viscose top, (bit like tempur) although this has better ventilation.

If you check them out and like the look of them I can point you in the right direction to order/see one in the flesh smile

Our current mattress is our 3rd in as many years due to back pain. 1st one bought online, and lasted about 13 months before back pain started. 2nd one was a memory foam one from Dreams - they're crap if you want to return it, so don't listen to the instore BS from the salesman. 3rd one is a Sealy Posturepedic. We've had it 1.5 years now. No probs.
