Well I am cutting my costs, if I get into uni that is, and thinking about maybe living in a static caravan.

I know quite a few people in the caravan and park home industry so should be a problem picking something good up cheap, and I know of a site I can go on.

Has anyone ever lived in a static caravan? or currently does live in one?

Thanks

Mexico.

Yes i lived in a mobile home in 1985/6, for a year whilst i was doing a self build project, admittedly it was a 42ft mobile home but i would never ever do it again (live in the caravan), ferking freezing in the winter and roasting hot in the summer, noisy when it rained, but the kids loved it.

Lived in one for three years while in my teens - parents were renovating our house. It wasn't fun. Four of us in the caravan, so maybe worse than just one person. It was freezing during the winter, cramped-you could barely turn around in the toilet, every movement/sound was carried through the caravan, there wasn't enough storage for day to day stuff(we had sheds on the farm for long term storage)..... I could go on.

shout caravanman your thread has arrived.

A mate of mine has lived in one parked on his parents drive while he builds his own house. It was only a temporary solution to his housing problems. Hes been there the best part of 2 years the filthy pikey!.

I lived in one for just over 8 months on site of the house we were renovating.

A friend lives in one permanently but to me it seems like more of a chalet.

Not really.

I spend a couple of weeks and a few weekends a year in my van.

I don't live in it permanently!

When not in the 'van I live in a coal bunker.

I would only be living in it during term time while at school.

The rest of the time I would be out of the country, so most of my life wont be in the caravan.

Just clothes, usual day to day junk and a shed for my work stuff.

Do you REALLY want to be having breakfast 2 feet away from the toilet with the aroma of your own st wafting up your nostrils. Seriously, get a room in a shared house - it's what being a student is all about. Whatever age you are going to Uni is all about the total experience and not just the qualifications.

Some caravan parks have a clause in their contract that states you must let the site rent your caravan out for a few weeks of the year to Joe Public, even if you have bought it!

If you live in it 12 months a year then it becomes permenant residence with tax implications.

Damn you Elster, I'm going to be outed now! (Why did my parents bring me up to always tell the truth?!)

Lived in a mobile home for 8 months after splitting up with ex-wife. This was on a "fixed" mobile home site. Wasn't too bad, as long as you don't suffer from claustrophobia!

On another occasion the owner of the flat I was renting had to move back in urgently. Not having enough for a deposit at the time (the bad old days) I managed to find someone who had a static caravan sited next to a commercial fishing lake. That was great, views from my window straight over the lake, really nice situation. Only had to stay there 6 months before I got a "proper" house.

Caravan living isn't bad, but the novelty wears off as time goes by.

Far better to live in a narrow boat, much more character!

I stayed in a big static caravan when I was an impoverished trainee helicopter pilot.

It is sh*t. That is all.

Stay in a shared house with other students, it'll be more fun and far less hassle.

Well was thinking of something a bit bigger about a 34/36 x 12ft.

Also going for a degree, not student life. I'm going as a mature student. I'm 25 and will still be running the business

Usually the council will grant a licnce for 9-12 months. Very few have a 12 month holiday licence.

A residential one would be a park home.

The council do not need to provide anything for you as it is a holiday home, for a residential park home they do.

I have looked at these, but mooring costs where I want to be seem to be quite pricey.

A rough shell costing £24k + the entire interior. However they don't really depreciate.

But what everyone saying is it is st and I shouldn't do it.

Just have to work a bit more and afford a house or apartment. I can't live with other people. I like my own space too much, and I am not so keen on living with students.
