Where to live in the North West?
Discussion
We are thinking of moving to a nicer area to where we live now, where we are at the moment is ok but not great (Ashton Under Lyne).
We need somewhere with plenty of land for horses, plenty of places to go shopping, good restaraunts and nightlife. Plenty of countryside for walks and flying birds of prey.
But the two most important things we need are privacy and to be no more than 1.5/2 hours away from Manchester.
We were thinking, Ribble Valley, Macclesfield, Aldery Edge/Cheshire area but not sure of specific areas that tick plenty of boxes.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Styal gets a lot of airport noise doesnt it?
How come avoid Alderly Edge? I have a friend up there and its nice when ive been up there.
Will look into diggle etc sounds like a good suggestion.

5 miles away from the Edge and you get 50% more for your money.
Nice town, good nightlife. Good crowd.
Styal is the closest to the airport yes but the noise isn't excessive.
It might seem it at first but you soon forget about it.
Also depends which way they are taking off of course
There are some stunning properties in Styal.
Alderley Edge: Just not for me. Too many tuppenny millionaires there and wannabes. Nice property again but a bit "crass".
Diggle, Delph, Greenfield are all great.
I wish you'd have mentioned it sooner, we've just sold a house in Greenfield that might have been right up your boulevard, although I believe it's for sale again. It certainly was last week, I'll check and report back...

I used to live in Stalybridge for many years, but (imo) tameside is now a dump, too much development etc....Saddleworth WAS nice in the 60's/70s, but is now expensive and overrated.......
Try Rossendale.....the finest scenery anywhere around Manchester, and 30 mins from the city centre,..... or Whaley Bridge/Disley are nice also....
Poynton/Alderley Edge/Wilmslow are full of WAGS.....
So yes......Rossendale......

Not thought of Rossendale so will add that to the short list. Stalyvegas is going down hill very quickly, when it was dubbed Stalyvegas is was ok but everyone from Ashton has started to move there and our lot have brought it down a peg or two
Quite fancy Heyrod/Mossley and up towards Dovestones but houses are just not nice enough, seems a nice enough area though.
Greenfield is a good idea, how much is the property? what sort of size is it?

The Greenfield house is a 4 bed detached and is now up at £585k.
We bought it in 2008 as a tenanted rental and sold it earlier this year. I heard through the grapevine that his circs have drastically altered and he needs to sell.
Can't post a link as I'm just in the bath on my phone at min
but Google it.
EDIT: Property address removed.
It's a lovely house with great gardens, open aspect to rear but has no stabling. I'm sure there's something you know of nearby for that though?

Somewhere between Glossop, New Mills, towards Buxton even, would do it - you'll get something with land and privacy, ticks all the boxes except decent nightlife. Nearly every house has a view you'd die for, and you're in serious countryside ideal for walking (so I've been told). We're in Marple Bridge and can be in Piccadilly in 25 mins by train, an easy 45 by car outside rushhour. Think Chisworth, Charlesworth, Disley, Hayfield - some of it's not bad value. We lived in south manchester and before moving looked at the usual suspects eg Alderley Edge/Wilmslow, but there's more to quality of life than a selection of wine bars.
A handy 3 acres for horses, good views, £550k, just call me Kirsty Allsopp
£700k stunner with 11 acres and beams

Thanks for all the suggestions, a lot of my friends live in Marple Bridge - a lot of nice property but hardly ever for sale.
Altringham is another good suggestion, got a mate who has just bought a house up there ill have to visit to see what its like.
Not so keen on Glossop and surrounding areas, I dont want to be in the country really, just have the illusion I am
