Burglar Alarms
Discussion
I'm moving house next week and want to get an alarm fitted as soon as is possible. Was wondering if anyone knew any good companies in South East London (the house is in Beckenham) We definitely want a properly fitted one rather than a Yale job from Homebase so any reccomendations welcome and if anyone is in this line of work and wants to PM me please feel free.
Thanks

You first need to consider if it is worth the cost and effort.
Will anyone take any notice of it going off?
Even down here in Hampshire the police will not respond to an alarm unless it is a fully monitored system and the alarm control company can confirm that more than one sensor has been tripped.
I am a neighbourhood watch coordinator and called to report an alarm sounding on my patch but the police would not respond unless I could confirm I had seen the culprits.

Being a neighborhood watch coordinator I should have thought you would know the fact that having an intruder alarm fitted in a domestic dwelling and by reputable company (not DIY). Significantly lower the risk of being the victim of a break in! I.e. they would rather pick a different house than have the arse ache off an alarm going off. Will anyone take any notice of it going off?

Ungarsee I would suggest that you contact your local crime prevention officer who should be able to point you in the right direction regarding a reputable NSI approved company, if I were in your shoes I would probably avoid the national companies and go with a well established local one for potentially better service and quality. Steve is correct in that to call the police out you will need to conform to the current standards and include a method of sequential confirmation but any installer will talk you through this. I would also strongly advise going for a wired alarm rather than wireless for trouble free operation (any decent engineer should be able to hide 99% of the cables) but if you do go wireless ensure it is of a high standard such as the Galaxy equipment.
If you want any further advice just ask, it's a shame you are off of our patch as I'm sure we could have sorted you out.

Had 18 burglaries on our estate in 5 weeks.
Note that every house that had been burgled didn't have an alarm.
They do now.
Just because you take no notice of a noise, doesn't mean a burglar is free to make one.
If an alarm is goes off for no reason, then there is obviously a problem that has caused it. I lay my bets nothing has been done to rectify it.

left my mobile phone on the car roof, hour later got a knock at the door - some kid had noticed the phone and did I want it back ?
neighbour left his front and side windows open for a good week to 2 weeks, had to contact the landlord to get them shut, no-one burgled the place
different areas I guess

neighbours alarm went off for over an hour, no-one apparently bothered much and it was way too loud
When I was in the intruder alarm industry I got called out to a break in at a small business where the offenders trashed the place emptied it at their leisure and a neighbour said just the same as you just did. Proper stroppy cow.Back then alarm sounders had to stop after 20 minutes, not sure about the regs now prob shorter.
You can now get a system that will text message any number so you can call a more helpful neighbour to have a look for you rather than have people ignore your annoying alarm.
If you are REALLY concerned get a good alarm system fitted by a NACOSS approved installer, linked to a monitoring station by BT redcare, make sure it is a confirmed set up, which the Police prefer because the monitoring system only contact them if a SECOND sensor is tripped, thus avoiding many false alarms, and wasted police man hours.....
