Returfing a lawn costs?
Discussion
Hi all,
I guess this is akin to 'how long is a piece of string' but any rough ideas would be good. My back lawn is utter crap, parts of it have sunk over the years, there's an old outhouse foundation in the middle of it that the turf really doesn't like being over and there are quite a lot of crevasses (not to exaggerate or owt) which regularly threaten to break my ankles when I'm mowing it. I think it needs completely digging up, rotovating, a couple or so tonnes of top soil added to level things out and returfing. As a rough guess it's around 40'x40'. I just want a nice flat, green, weed free lawn, doesn't need to be bowling green perfection, just nice! I've looked online and prices for turf seem to vary greatly per sqm. Luckily the cheapest I could see (at £1.60/sqm) is from a fairly local place.
Cheers,
Rob

Ours is about 70sqm or msq or whatever. However, we managed to fill one skip with old turf and soil = £160, hire of turf cutter (can also be used to rotavate if you go a bit mental with it on the deepest cut!) £90 bag of topsoil £70ish
Lots of hard labour to get it nice and even. We got the turf at mates rates though the same stuff from tillers is around 3 or 4 quid a sq m
In short - more than you think.

Can't help with the costing, but I returfed part of our lawn last year after some major work putting in a new patio and walls, etc. It looked absolutley great once it had bedded in, but this year it's had a couple of large thistles, etc crop up in it that I've been quick to remove, so it doesn't stay 'perfect' for long.....
If you can build the level up do that!
Strip old turf, topsoil up (tread in) rake out nice and flat then turf.
Try and use rolawn medallion turf, very good hard wearing stuff.
Expect between 10-30 per m2 depending on the amount of work (i know its a huge difference but the job could be straightforward or it could be terrible)
