I have a fan, one of these

It has 3 settings and all three make it too loud for bedroom use, can I get something that will make it spin slower?

Any ideas?

Thanks

1. Remove guard

2. Insert Penis

It will distract you from the noise anyway.

You can buy a fan speed controller.

It works like a dimmer (don't use a lights dimmer as a raging fire is also hard to sleep next to!) so you'll wire it in to the mains supply lead (you may have to use an additional box to contain it as they are designed for wall mount operation normally) et voila controllable fan!

try here, there are many. You'll need to know the power consumption of your fan.

Submerse it in water, the water has a higher viscosity than air and thus the blades will slow down. Make sure its plugged in first and you have a good grip on the metal frame.

HTH wink

Wacking a great big resistor will slow it down or try a variable one so you can alter its speed that way (I think).

If you use cold water it will increase the "cooling" effect, bit like ghetto air-con!

I would recommend a new fan instead... www.argos.co.uk code 425/0461 biggrin @ almost £59 it's expensive for a fan, but believe me it is the best pedestal fan I have ever owned, and I have owned a few. I get hot a lot.

One of the many plus points to it, is its 'sleepy wind' setting biggrin

I've had sleepy wind before... It inflates my duvet.

I also want a desk fan that just swishes round, rather than sounding like an Apache gunship taking off. I guess something akin to a dimmer makes sense, unless it hums like an angry hornet?

Thanks guys, I shant be buying a new one, seeing as this one cost me £50 from JL. But I will be trying some of the above suggestions.

Or I just go nuts and get an a/c unit.

If you think a fan is loud, don't get a freestanding a/c unit! Get a plumbed in one, a lot more expensive though...

If you put a diode in series with the fan, you'd lose roughly half the power. The mains 'hum' probably won't be much quieter but the blades will be quieter.
