clearing weeds from shingle driveway

by back driveway is beginning to lose the fight against weeds... the drive is laid with medium-sized shingle... i guess whatever barrier was laid beneath it has pretty much given up the ghost now.

can i simply nuke everything with weedkiller, or am i going to have to scrape up all the shingle and do something a little more drastic?

Sodium chlorate will nuke everything for you, the membrane is there to stop the soil and stones mixing, driving on it will destroy it in no time.
