Hoping someone can help...was really hard to close and lock the door earlier (needed slamming) but now won't shut at all...I'm thinking door/frame may have expanded in the heat? Anyone got any advice? Sorry bit of a crap topic, but important as I don't want my little dog running off in the middle of the night! frown

Put a bouncer on the door?

The weight may force it shut.

Does it have any of those little slider clips in the sides/base, if one slips it can make shutting the door a sod. I had that with our cheap windows last week, slide the clip back to where its meant to be and it should work again...

Bouncers aren't cheap and I'm saving for summer. And the dog's no good as she's a goddamn westie haha.

Doesn't look like it's dropped- tried lifting it to close it but seems to make no difference.

How old is it?

People never get told, or fail to, oil those bolts that move all round the door. They eventually sieze, fail and stay stuck open or closed, or half way etc... A workmate had their 5yr old door go a while back and needed a new one fitting (inside bit, so not that bad), the fitter pointed out it was dry and siezed.

Are all the sliding pins/rotating hooks in the open position, and do they all open/close freely when operating the lock/unlock with the door open?

That is if your door is one with all the security bits on it (as most UPVC are these days)?!

Temp fix

Have you a torch and someone else at home ? get them to lean against the door while you shine the torch through from the other side ,it will give you an idea where it is catching ,gently lever the door into place(flat bladed screwdriver and be gentle or your damage the frame) and if it doesn't lock wedge a chair under the handle.

Dave- I think it's quite new- a year or 2 I'd say. All the bolts/security bits are moving as they should, though they are a bit dry. Can't see anything like that actually stopping it closing. More seems to be the door just doesn't fit in the frame- must have expanded so goodness knows how that can be fixed!

MrV- no I'm home alone for the next hour or 2, so I'll have to get housemate to help me out when he's back. I'm not sure it could even be levered into place though..I suppose as long as we can get it closed I can get the landlord onto it tomorrow.

I just hope he isn't going to blame it on us and make us pay somehow.

Another thought can you see the screw heads that the frame has been fixed in with ? you may get away with just tightening them to move the frame in

Check the hinges - there is usually some adjustment on them (exposed screw heads, pointing inward).
If there is, use it to move the door toward the hinge, giving more clearance to the latch.

Yes, it will expand in the heat... generally door expanding, rather than the frame. When you push it to, to try and close it, try it from the very top and the very bottom rather than the hand in the middle to see where it's catching. If it's both, you'll have fun. frown Quite likely to just be at the bottom where you get the little sliders on the bottom that it runs up a little before sealing. I've known these needing to be taken off and cut down a bit before.

Heat I am afraid.
I am a joiner an have been to about 8 call outs for exactly the same problem, UPVC shrinks and expands in the heat the same way that a timber door will do in the wet or dry.
Is it that the door doesnt fit to the frame or the locking mechanism not lining up?

as geordie says , its the heat.

It took me about 2 minutes to make the adjustment to the hinges , if its the same as mine ,

remove the small cover plate on the end of each hinge, you will see an allen bolt head , give this a 1/2 turn on each of them ( anticlockwise ) then a bit more if needed

replace cover plate
