Dishwasher & Pipes Noise
Discussion
Our dishwasher has recently started making a lot of noise when it runs - well, I'm not sure if it's the dishwasher itself or the plumbing!
It's a sort of loud humming noise which goes through the whole house (it's enough to wake you up if it is timed to run during the night).
THe dishwasher is still under warranty, but they'll charge me if it turns out to be a fault with the plumbing, and I have British Gas Homecare for the plumbing but again I think they'd probably charge if it turned out to be a fault with the dishwasher.
Any ideas how I can find out?
It only makes the noise when it's actually sucking water in (I think) - doesn't make the noise when it's swishing water around....

Not sure what water hammer is, but this is more of a humming/groaning noise - sounds more likely to be the pump on the dishwasher then (presumably the noise travels down the pipes)?
Wouldn't surprise me, we've had no end of problems with it since we got it
Surprising as it's a Bosch and our previous one lasted donkeys years.

Just realised the washing machine is also plumbed in and doesn't make the same noise, so will get my other half to change the pipes around tonight - at least I can eliminate the plumbing and then call dishwasher man back again !! (one is using warm water, one is using cold water).

Humming or groaning will more likely be the dishwasher.
Some dishwashers run the pump when the water fisrt goes in to clear out any crap left behind in the macerator (if yours has a macerator)
It could actually be the sound of the macerater you can hear.
Small chicken bone fragment being processed perhaps. Hope it's not a teaspoon

I'd go with the dish washer, for the main reason that water hammer or surge wouldm't be a constant noise. Water Hammer is normally associated with a valve closing, or opening, rappidy. A pressure wave is caused which then travels along the pipe.
It does happen in household systems but not hugely common, or that I'm aware of anyway.
Very coomon on water networks if pumps are subject to popwer failure etc or start up to quicky, known to cause bursts and damage to pipe/valves.

Both dishwasher and washing machine make a big thump noise when they've finished sucking in water - presumably that's the hammer thing?
The humming/groaning noise goes for a while then stops as the dishwasher swooshes, then starts again etc. etc.
Didn't get a chance to change pipes tonight, will do tomorrow and test it.
Would the macerator thingy be in use all the time? It makes the noise all the way through the cycle (except when its swooshing or just sitting there drying).

It could well be, in some normally old systems, you can here a clunk when you turn taps etc off. This is normally caused by a pipe, possibly due to a small pressure surge, moving and kitting another object. If it's something you want to sort out, my suggestion would be to make sure the pipes are secure, ie, using a pipe clip thing. Probably not a major issue tho, would depend how easy it is to gain access.
Not too bothered about the thump, it's the humming we need to sort - means we can't run the dishwasher at night anymore, and concerned it's a sign something is failing.
Will swap the pipes over if i can then run the dishwasher - dodgy back at the moment so can't get under the sink myself, so reliant on fiance to do it

That doesn't make much sense - dishwashers spend the vast amount of their time "swooshing". The only other things that they do are fill (about 5L of water, very short time), drain (pretty fast drain - maybe 1 min) and dry (either silent from residual heat, or sometimes using a fan).
Someone mentioned a macerator earlier on - not saying they don't exist, but I've never seen one in a domestic dishwasher. Big bits usually just sit in the filter.
It's not been connected up to the hot water supply, so you're hearing the header tank in the loft refilling, has it?
Otherwise, I could only guess that the machine is hard up against something and the normal machines noises are reverberating through the otherwise very quiet house. Daughter had a "heartbeat" doll years ago which you couldn't hear but it used to get wedged between her bed and and the wall - at night the whole house seemed to echo with a eerie "thump-thump".
Not sure if this helps...
My dishwasher pump failed just out of warranty...
A google revealed that most dishwashers these days have naff paumps fitted to keep costs down... They can make all sorts of horrible noises...
Anyway, for our dishwasher we used www.whirlpoolparts.co.uk for a quality replacement, £100ish and easy to fit.
Cheers

It's all really weird - sad as it is I studied it's cycle this afternoon (am off sick with a bad back and bored to tears), it spends an awful lot of its time doing absolutely nothing except making this humming noise (which seems to come through the house rather than from the m/c itself, although I think it's just a noise which is travelling).
e.g. the screen on the front says something along the lines of "pre-rinse, finished in 28 minutes", but if i pop open the door there's just steam and no actual water. So it's not pre-rinsing at all. But it is making the godawful noise.
(which it only started a couple ofw eeks ago).
Decided to try connecting it up to the cold water supply instead (it's on the hot water), but I can't unscrew the cold water one. Well I did, enough to make it leak, now i can't stop it leaking and had to turn off the mains cold water. Damn !!!
I hate being a girlie wuss sometimes!!

What make and model is it? Does it say in the instructions that it can be connected to hot or cold? Dishwashers normally connect to cold - I note you say the noise has only just started, but if you call the repairman out under warranty he may say it's wrongly connected (unless the instructions say that's OK).(which it only started a couple ofw eeks ago).

The only thing in the machines that are a bit noisy are the drain pumps, but as I mentioned earlier, they only run for a short period. Some high-end machines have a extra pump which washes water over the filter screen, but that runs as the same time as it's washing and you said it isn't noisy then.

We had this on our dish washer and it cost a couple of pence to fix. The pipe supplying water to the spinny thing on the under side of the top drawer had broken its fixings and was vibrating under high flow rates of water. It is very loud when it does this. Get a cable tie and fix it back to it orignal position and all should/could go quiet. Did for us.
It's a Bosh Logixx and the manual says cold water preferred, but hot water also fine up to maximum of 60 degrees c.
We swapped the pipes and it's stopped making the noise (it's now on the cold water), but the problem now is that the washing machine can only go on a cold wtaer pipe, and of course now the dishwasher is plugged into that !
So it's some combination of dishwasher + hot pipe - any ideas?
Only started a few weeks ago, dishwasher doesn't make the noise when plugged into the cold water pipe, but the pipes are about 1 inch away from each other...
