I've had a drain that doesn't really drain since the builders put it in and in these thunderstorms its excessive overflowing has led me to investigate.

This is the drain without the weird bit. As you can see - all looks normal and gets rid of everything immediately (through the hole on the left).

This is the weird bit itself:

And this is what it looks like when I put the bit back. It drops to a level where it hugely restricts and almost blocks the flow into the channel on the left, hence the block/overflowing.

So my question is should it be there, what should it do and is it ok for me to chuck it? (I have a grate that screws on the top to stop stray stuff going in).

Thanks smile

I could be wrong here, but the hole on the left looks like it could be a rodding eye - in which case, the pipe drops below and goes in a U shape. The hole to the left goes through to the main line, and give you a way of rodding it clear if it blocks up further down.

If its only draining through the rodding eye then it could be the U bend is blocked with dead leaves etc.

Wait for a second opinion on the above, I could (and may well be) wrong.

yes it should be there, it stops rubbish getting into the main and smells coming out of the drain

leave it in there

Thanks.

So where is the blockage? Have I cleared it by tampering or should I rod down?

Looks to me like it creates a water trap to stop bad smells. Without it the water may drain quicker but there'd be no trap aspect to it.

Try it with out and see if the drain stinks. If so, put it back.

stick your hand into the water and clear any crap out of it

also worth poking a long stick in the hole on the side just to make sure there's nothing blocking it towards the main

leaves usually find their way in and cause a few problems but when you lift the sleeve they flush away

Tip a bucket of water doen the drain, it should exit through the hole on the left (the drain). If it doesn't, then its blocked, and you won't get rods into it by the looks of things. Try a hose with a jet type attachment down it, of find the downstream access and rod upwards as it were...

I think tampering has fixed it...

I poured a bucket of water down without - instantly went out of the left

Then I put the plastic bit back and poured another bucket down - that also rapidly disappeared. Not quite as fast, but faster than a thunderstorm can deliver.

Thanks Ric - smell stopper still in place and the blockage has gone! thumbup
