Can anyone recommend a decent lawnmower?

50ft lawn, would maybe like a self propelled and one that cuts very close to the ground but not silly money!!

Any suggestions?

You can buy very cheap petrol ones these days, I spent £200 on a little Mountfield for areas I can't reach on the tractor, this one I think:

Which is superb and 100% reliable. It's self propelled, but won't leave stripes.

Thanks nda, not bothered about stripes just want a close cut.

Also, last 2 electric flymos have blown because of large tree dropping pine needles, no idea if this makes diffrence on what to choose?

Electric ones are pretty awful to be honest.

I'd go with a decent brand such as the one I linked you to, these will probably have a Briggs & Stratton engine which will outlive you, and your children.

For a close cut you can't beat a cylinder mower (as opposed to rotary). Just make sure you have it regularly serviced to keep the blades sharp. We used to have a couple of huge Atco machines, the larger of the two known as "Big Bertha" that literally made a bowling green out of your lawn. Superb.

In terms of quality of mowers, I don't think you can beat Atco or Hayter.

I've heard that the Honda Izy is very good, although I've never used one myself.

Get a self propelled petrol cylinder.

I've just moved house, and only had the flymo to hand to cut my newly acquired 90ft lawn and it took me forever!

My old dear has the petrol one, and i'll be wanting that back asap!

so many to choose from....

Critieria:
small garden
easy to manoeuvre (not too heavy)
like the idea of self propelled
Fairly cheap price wise
won't blow up if going over pine needles (large tree)

any good companies to speak to rather than the joey at B&Q to get advice?

Sorry, I thought that was the self propelled one. Here is the one I have - should find one for sub £200.

http://www.justlawnmowers.co.uk/pages/productspage...

I have a few acres of lawn and have had a few mowers over the years of various types. Cylinder mowers need a very flat surface to perform well, if you have this you'll end up with a bowling green finish. However they are not suitable for your application, i.e. going over pine cones/needles etc.

Hayter mowers are almost semi-professional and again I wouldn't recommend one for you. I've had several and they are first class machines but expensive.

The one I've linked you to will give you a super cut, has a quiet and reliable engine and will last you ten years or more without doing more than putting petrol in it and making sure there's enough oil. You never need to service them. In my experience, servicing lawnmowers is expensive and achieves nothing - just keep them full of the right fluids!

£225 here

I guess you'll have to shop around - mine was £190 something from a local supplier and may have been on special offer.

Feck! I keep doing that to you!

Well glad you found the right mower, I'm very pleased with mine, never a problem with it - starts on the gentlest of pulls and makes a nice job of the areas. The point with these is that will last you for years.

a guy at a mower company told me that Lawn-King are made on same production line (same engine too) as the Mountfield, so basically same mower but much cheaper. Anyone know if this is true?

I quite like the Honda Izy - but bit expensive for me

Lawn King and Mountfield are both part of GGP (Global Garden Products), prices are roughly the same. I prefer Mountfield, but it comes down to personal preference I guess.

Yes the Champion is another brand of Trenchex, part of GGP.

So many brands! You can spend thousands on mowers and there'll always be a better one out there. The Izy is nice but maybe a bit too nice for a smallish lawn. It's finding the balance between plastic rubbish made in Mexico and a decent reasonably priced mower.

I stick with my original recommendation. smile

Good luck...
