Sound complaint on private land

Can anyone advise me on the laws of sound limits on private property. A friend of mine has a bit of land out in the country and takes out his motorcross bike once or twice a week. Now his bike is not excessively loud but has had two complaints by a neighbour. He has moaned that it is not conducive to country life and wants him to stop. I can see his point but we can't hear the bikes from the house that is only about 200 yards from the track so i don't see how he can hear it from his house which is further away.
Are there any laws that state that there needs to be a sound limit to such activities on private land?

It will vary from local authority to local authority.
If the neighbour complains the LA can choose to slap the owner of the land / responsible party with a section 60 which will make it an offense to carry out noisy activities until argued otherwise.
My suggestion would be to have a word with your LA as to what their regulations are.

The Tort of nuisance may come into effect. Namely, is the person creating the noise spoiling the neighbour's enjoyment of his land. What time of day, how often he does it, is it necessary , the duration etc.. can all be taken into consideration (along with a number of other factors if the court decides to do so).

Agricultural land is taken seriously by planning depts. I know of a property near me which has just lost an appeal re land use and is going to have to take up a driveway and remove some gates.
TBH if someone started turning up to bez round a field on a dirt bike near me, I would be complaining as well.
Sound travels in mysterious ways so the fact a neighbour who is further away is not a surprise. Neighbours of my parents had a party in a marque once, noise wasn't too bad at my parents, but the Police got complaints from miles away. Took them a long time to track down the source!
To be honest dirt-bikes and indeed any kind of noisy motor vehicle been driving on the same bit of land gets irritating after a while. I seem to recall the Police might have the right to seize bikes being used in this way.
I would try and discuss it with a neighbour, and come o some agreement about when and how often the bike can be caused. Nothing is going to be gained by any party if it is allowed to escalate.

Dirt bikers don't exactly endear themselves to people. Around us it is a common proble that people trespass onto farmers fields to use their bikes. Not surprisingly the local farmers are not too impressed.
I don't have a problem with people enjoying themselves, but their actions should not cause a problem to others.
