As part of my decoration plans i want to add cat5 and tv to the upstairs. The floor is up and the best routes between rooms are occupied by power cables. I dont want to have to take up or patch more than I have to so how close can they go with no negative interactions? If it's only a little it may save me a load of hassle.
I want to run the tv with the data but I dont think that should be an issue should it?

What sort of power cables are we talking about? i.e. when will they be loaded and more importantly switched on and off?

How far apart can you make them? 350mm? That would probably be fine.. Maybe some kind of shielding.. but there seem to be issues with shielding if it isn't fitted properly..

Ideally they should be (afaik) 500mm apart..

If it were my project I'd try and get them as far apart as possible, 500mm min.

I think that sort of spacing should be possible. The power is mainly the socket ring. There are a few lights it would have to go over but I have been told going over is not an issue it's parallel running. It's not the sort of power that will be on an off like the lights aren't fluorescent.

Indeed, in an ideal world they would be perpendicular.. smile If it's only lighting then that should be fine anyway. Move the lighting cable to one side of the void and put the CAT5 on the other side smile

And keep it away from any low voltage lighting transformers

Have you thought of these: http://www.homeplugs.co.uk/acatalog/Solwise_HomePl...

I use them and have saved me putting in new Cat5 or using crappy wireless - transmission rates are very good, and unless you have a good reason and kit for Gigabit ethernet then I'd save yourself the hassle of the wire....

Regs advise parallel runs no closer than 6 inches. More is ideal but you wont have issues at this. the data/TV cables can cross mains power cables at 90 degrees right up close to them, just not run parallel.

Cheers guys I got that kind of gap in the end with good parallel distance but had to compromise with about 3 crossovers on the longest run.

Greg- I have seen those before, a good suggestion. I have always been concerned about the fact the mains is the carrier signal. I'm sure it's my own paranoia but don't like the idea of what could happen if one failed.
