Its my daughters 5th birthday this week and she has said she wants a fish tank. So a second hand tank has been acquired etc.

However should we go for coldwater or tropical fish? The fish shop suggests tropical as they are prettier and she can apparently have more, however coldwater are apparently easier to look after.

So views?

I have tropical, and they are really easy to look after. The only extra thing you need is the heater. They all come with the thermostat built in so you can set it and then leave it alone. Everything else is the same as for a coldwater tank (except the fish obviously)

I kept Goldfish for my son and daughter. They can be quite labour intensive even with a filter and a decent size tank. But they are nice fish and an easy intorduction. But they are seriously messy and require at least a 25% water change every seven or so days.

Overfeeding is the biggest problem, as is the quality of the water you put in...

Let the go recent into a friends pond, and am switching to tropical this weekend.
