The 12v/50w halogen bulb in our shower unit has blown. However, I've tried replacing it but the new one does not work either.

I know that these things have a transformer to step down from 240v, so is it possible that this may have blown? And if so, is it easy to replace?

I'm afraid that things electrical leave me even more confused than most other DIY tasks.

Blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker?

More likely than blown transformer - you can generally smell them a mile away!

The fan which operates from the same switch is still functioning, so I would guess not.

So I guess that means pulling things out of the ceiling.

Yes, it will need the light out unless you can get to the transformer with just the lamp out(unlikely due to size) it will probably come out quite easily.

Make sure the switch or better still the power is off before attempting to get to the transformer.

An inline fuse is possible but unlikely imho

it's not uncommon for transformers to pack up or for the lamp holders to become worn out

changing a transormer is a relatively straight forward job
BUT
If you are not confident and competent to do it then don't attempt it
