Power consumption question
Discussion
One of my mates was just telling me that his house mates have just had a go at him for leaving the kettle and toaster plugged in at the wall overnight (with the plug switch on) they say it uses energy being on standby
They are wrong aren't they!? I personally can't see how a simple kitchen applicance uses energy just by being plugged in at the wall?
The said housemates have also left post it notes by every electrical switch saying "remember to turn it off"
They sound like fun.. We need to have a no cats rolling road day outside their house I reckon., with a couple of patio heaters and floodlamps for good measure.

They are f
kwits pulled in to the hysterical green nonsense
Tell them to buy a power meter, I got mine for about £15 online for the electric motorbike. It will measure based on KW/h.
Once you have run it for an hour, and you have a reading (if anything), take the meter and ever so gently smash the person who left the post-it notes around in the face with it repeatedly. This unnecessary violent act, although may land you in prison for assault, may just serve to beat the stupidity out of them.

Your mate needs to move, lest he be infected by his housemates stupidity. They are wrong aren't they!? I personally can't see how a simple kitchen applicance uses energy just by being plugged in at the wall?

hi, im the unfortunate house mate here. The house mates are being very childish about such little things, as said, they have left post it notes everywhere. Im not sure whether to do the opposite not to be irritating but just out of the fact i dont want to be treated like a kid, im nearly 21 and seem to know much more on the topic than the seemingly eco idiots. They also leave sky on all night which uses energy, how ironic!. What u reckon i should do guys?

Unplug the skybox every night.
hehe like it! Personally im not tooooo worried about saving a few quid over a quarter on electricity bills, im not that tight up. But then my e21 would try and make me otherwise! So i wouldnt care to unplug it, but i think its more principle now and i cant lose when i know im in the right! Im really tempted to just buy a bloody power meter and prove then wrong!E21_Ross said:

Also take the batteries out of all the remotes. They also "use" power.

Surely unless an appliance is drawing current, it's not using power?
That's a very swanky kettle and toaster you've got if there's anything on them that draw current when not in use.
Kettles and toasters don't have a "standby".
Exactly, Sky box... yes, DVD Player... yes, Kettle... no, Toaster... no!!That's a very swanky kettle and toaster you've got if there's anything on them that draw current when not in use.

I blame the "turn everything off at night to save the planet" commercials which seem to be all over the place at the moment, they often feature kettles for absolutely no reason whatsoever!
