Maybe a dumb question..........

Need to dig out some ground, mostly compacted soil but impregnated with portions of (half/quarter) brick and golf balls/tins. yikes

Spade will not cut it, so going out to buy either a pick or mattock - which would be best guys, thanks.

Mattock, you can use the axe bit to break up the tricky bits, then the other side to dig/rake back the ground.

Very handy underused tool.

Pick since it comes with both a pointed and mattock type end, mattock might be both pricer and harder to obtain.

Actually, thinking back, if it is very hard, then a pick might work best, but the mattock would do the job once you get a start, then you dig by attacking the side you've uncovered.

Thanks for the speedy replies folks.thumbup

Have a pick head in the garage, but no handle - lord knows where it is...........no, it is not in the boot of the car!

A new fibreglass handle mattock (plus hickory handle for the pickhead) it is then.
