Hi

We've decided to get a new front door so I had someone round to give me a quote for fittng a decent quality composite door. £1200 all in is what i was told, which was more than I expected. Trouble is, I don't really want to get too many quotes because of all the follow-up sales calls that will come with them.

Does anyone know enough to tell me if that's a reasonable quote?

Thanks
Nick

We paid just shy of £1000 for our's - all part of a new double-glazing deal.

We paid £2k for patio doors, big window, small bathroom window and a PVC front door. All in and fitted.

(granted it's a very plain front door)

Sounds as though you have been quoted a typical market price.
I paid a little less than that for a composite with some fancy anti-bump, anti-pick lock as opposed to the usual barrel type thingy.

That included frame and sidelight windows btw.

Mind you getting the right paint colour so the garage door would match was an absolute bugger... frown

Father in laws mate has a building company and quoted £800 (that's normal..not a mates rate)

Wicks do a build to order and fit yourself for around £500. Looked quite a simple job.

What an effing ripoff this country is. My girlfriend had a metal security door supplied & fitted/ metal frames high spec locks for £1000ish - not sure what that would be in Slovkian currency before Jan this year. There double glazing is much much better than I've seen here too.

Sorry but I've got this mental image of your g/f having a fitting for a chastity belt.

I just had a few quotes for a Homesafe Amersham front composite door - £750, £1000 and £1200, and the same companies had similar differentials for a composite stable door for the back.
Actually went with the cheapest one, as I used them on my previous property.
Oh, and because they were a lot cheaper than the others smile

I can't help with your quotes, but when I got prices for my house to be double glazed, after confusing most of the sales people by getting scientific about their products, I made it clear from the beginning that I had a number of companies coming in to quote over a two week period, I would not sign or agree to anything straight away and at the end of the period had I had a single call etc from the company, their quote would be binned regardless of price. A few tried to persuade me, they failed.

i just bought two sets of double glazed french windows for £1,200 all in.

They were were made to order and were approx 2.3m wide by 2.0 high (so they had three panels of glass)... they were delivered to my house and were fitted with k-glass.

pretty chuffed with the price tbh... paid about £150 for them to be installed.

as for a front door, i also managed to pick up a hardwood front door for one my rental properties... it was a magnet jobby with partial glazing... the guy in the shop stuffed up and i got if for £35... methinks it should have been slightly more than that! lol

I picked up a composite front door from ebay (cancelled order by a company) delivered for £270 then got a local carpenter to fit it for £70 one Saturday morning.
The local door/window companies near me are charging from £600 upwards to supply and fit.
