gluing cement board to brick
Discussion
We had a brick opening skimmed with a sort of fireproof render which worked quite well. It looks like a coarse cement finish and holds up very well to the heat kicked out by a woodburner at a range of about 3in.
I'll try to figure out the manufacturer if you're considering options.

And it's the most hideous stuff to work with. Both the backing coat and finish. The render has a consistency of screed and the 'plaster' is stickier than honey.
Finish was crap but hey it didn't crack.
