Does anyone know if I can replace the bulb in my camping lantern with an LED one. Google doesn't seem to help in identifying a suitable item.

The lamp uses 4 D-size batteries, so I guess is 6v. The bulb it has in at the minute is a KPR113 4.8V 0.75A.

I'm hoping for a brighter light without shortening the battery life.

What he said. I think I only paid 2 quid for the entire lantern in a sale. I was thinking more along the lines of less than a fiver. Oh well, will have to put up with my measly dim, orangey filament bulb.

This one should do it @ £6.99, but check the bulb sizes first. I've had one in my 5D Maglite (will also work in 2-6 cell lamps) for 3 years now, batteries last for ages.

Or for an extra 50p you can get a whole new lantern.

I've got one of these and it is brighter than many bigger lanterns.

I'm in the market for a new lantern, I sort of blew my last one up when I plugged it into the airbed pump adaptor @ 1000mAh instead of the 300mAh normal one. Smelt burning and it hasn't worked since.

Linky?

Can't remember which site I got mine from but there is one here for £7.49.

Watch out for the cheap ones - they don't put out as much light (lumens?) as the dearer variety,

Must have been a different voltage, or reversed polarity as the item plugged in will only draw the required current.

Agreed - but the one above while being cheap is very good. It is however a compact lantern (~5inches tall) and I'm comparing it to similar sized lights. It is not going to light up the campsite like a tilly light.

No, a simple charger - battery setup should only be charged at around C/5 (a fifth of the rated capacity) as a higher current will charge the battery too fast leading to overheating / warping in the battery cells and damage them as happened here.

From one of my manuals.

manual said:
The charge current for small lead-acid batteries should be set between 10% and 30% of the rated capacity (30% of a 2Ah battery would be 600mA).
