Starter Tool Kit

I'd say household needs are different to car needs (essentially, woodwork vs metalwork).
Take a trip to B&Q - dozens of kits to choose from of all sizes.
However if you're a complete DIY newbie, don't bite off too much...
Ah ok, well weighted towards household rather than car then.Take a trip to B&Q - dozens of kits to choose from of all sizes.

Is something like this too cheap?

What do you expect to be doing with that kit from B+Q. Better to buy what you need as you need it, and you dont need to spend a fortune on pro tools just dont buy the cheapest.
Absolutely no idea. I just fancy a basic kit as I have nothing at all at the moment and family are asking me what i'd like for christmas. At my B&Q they have one like this:
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?isSearch=tru...
But with a decent set of screwdrivers and a hammer for the same money.
As a basic list of tools for simple home maintenance:
1. Screwdrivers (buy decent ones)
2. Pliers (buy decent ones)
3. Adjustable spanners * 2
4. Hammer (buy a decent one)
5. Basic wood saw (Get a tenon saw they're easier to use and perfect for small jobs (like you would typically use at school))
6. Tape measure (Get a stanley flat based one like in the kit above, makes it so much easier and they don't automatically spool back)
7. Small spirit level
8. 2 or 3 foot spirit level
9. Retractable Knife with spare blades
10. Decent medium sized toolbox (leave enough room to grow)
11. Filler knife.
Others:
12. Couple of small quick clamps (12~18")
13. Adjustable Boiler spanner
14. Plumb line or laser level
15. Selection of Sand paper and block or electric sander.
16. Chisels and Mallet.
17. Rubber mallet.
18. Electrical test screwdriver.
19. 8" Mole grips.
If money allows:
Cordless Hammer drill with a selection of drill bits and screwdriver bits.
Stuff i'd recommend you keep in or with your tool box:
1. Selection of wood screws, bolts, nuts and rawl plugs.
2. Bottle of liquid PTFE
3. Small tub of lightweight filler.
4. Roll of masking tape.
5. Roll of insulating tape.
6. Tube of superglue or epoxy.
