Mrs Saleen836 has just moved into a new rented property and we have discovere a problem with the boiler, it would appear the only way to have the heating on is to also have the hot water on at the same time, as soon as the water tank in the cupboard is up to temp it switches off the boiler as it should, it also shuts off the boiler from the central heating! the only way I can get the heating back on is by draining off the hot water so the boiler kicks in to re-heat the water which in turn makes the heating work, any guesses?

Bad plumbing, or stuck three-way valve. (more likely stuck 3-way, not uncommon).

If it's rented, just tell the landlord, shirley?

As already mentioned, might be worth checking for a stuck diverter / zone valve (ie its not opening and allowing water to flow around the heating circuit).
