So who swears by the SDS backbox sinkers versus bolster chisel and hammer. Going into brick and not block.

You guessed it - have to cut out about 100 (sockets, light switches, TV, network, etc) and thought that I would invest in the modern approach, but a lot of people complain about the quality of the sinkers. Thus, if anybody has a good recommendation, please share.

I think the sinkers are really designed for blocks - check what they say.

However, I can't think of a reason why you couldn't use a big core drill...

Best bet is a small SDS chisel (sds drill with rotary stop)

Our usual method is Wall Chaser (2 disc Hilti job)for the vertical chases then use it horizontally for the top & bottom of the box. Finish off with an SDS/Chisel Bit combo and Bob's your Mother's Brother...

Had thought of this but discounted it - but given your positive experience(s) will give it a go.

The chaser also means running/cutting channels for cable will be easier. thumbup

If the wall to be chased is nice and consistent, not too hard and not too soft, they can work well.

If concrete/hard bricks, or rubbishy old plaster, or a soft/hard bricks/mortar combo are involved, forget it.

I have one somewhere but mostly stich drill then use a 35mm SDS chisel, with a little practice you can cut perfect snug holes for the boxes and the plate covers the rough edges.
