Yep. There is a reason why dishwasher tabs are 78x the price of washing up liquid.

Great practical joke to play next time you're at the house of someone who has a dishwasher hehe

OK, how about automatic washing powder? That doesn't foam...

No, but it makes your plates soft and cuddly.

Why, what happens?? Let's see some pics

ETA searched on Google and saw this question on Yahoo! answers:

I put washing up liquid in my dishwasher and now it won't work. Is it beyond repair ?
I know, I know... but I ran out of dishwasher tablets and didn't think it would do any harm. Foam all over the kitchen, and now when I switch it on, it just rumbles away for hours, doesn't wash the dishes, doesn't turn itself off. Is there anything I can do to make it love me again ?

Spannerbox - yes, of course I was a fool. I expect you've never done anything foolish yourself, unlike the rest of humanity.

When I was 18 I worked in a pub, and whilst on my own one evening, I decided to clean out the glass washer. I put around half a pint of Fairy Liquid in it and switched it on. Not my finest hour, scooping up foam with a dustpan.
