I'm getting a new(er) house at the end of Jan, I'll be replacing a lot of the carpets and have been looking at the Amtico or Karndean flooring. The hall and kitchen are already Amtico.

How hard is this to lay? Is it similar to the laminate floors that click together or a specalist job only?

I "think" it is specialist lay only.

Its fairly straightforward to lay. You must have a good, clean and level surface to start with, and start in the centre of the room.

It is also a bugger to keep properly clean!

Its not the easiest thing to lay if you want a proper job, first of all the floor will need latexing for concrete or plywood if its a timber floor and needs a specialist fixing so the fixings dont show through the covering. Dependant on where you are I have a good contact for laying and possibly supplying. try www.karndeanfitter.com

I'm near Aberdeen (well I will be when I get home from this rig!). Is these much difference between Karndean and Amtico?
Is Amtico really the best or are other makes worth looking at?
I think getting professionals to do the job would be best, I'm not the most patient person in the world so if it's fiddly I'm better making tea.
Cheers

I think Amtico has the best name because they pioneered the product, Karndean is as good for me and a bit cheaper. Amtico has the snob value. google Amtico and Karndean and 1 of the first to be listed was by far the cheapest. I usually pay £60 per box for labour, this includes plywooding or latexing, glue and the labour to fit the floor, hope this helps

It's a shame you are so far north because Karndean are based in Evesham and their showroom there is absolutely superb.

From memory Karndean is cheaper than Amtico, I've seen an advert online for Amtico Essentials for £40 a sq metre. Now to me thats not too bad as I recall paying £40 a sq metre for some top end pergo flooring for our bedroom back in 2006.

Thanks for the information folks, I'll have to go and see some flooring people to get proper quotes and see if there is much of a difference between the prices of the products, and how much they intend to charge for fitting it.
After all the convincing my wife took to lay this floor instead of carpet in the dining room I should have got quotes first!

A friend of mine is a floor layer, and specialises in Karndean and Amtico and the results are stunning in some cases. You can have the most beautiful designs laid, but I understand it is very easy to go horridly wrong with it and best done by a specialist. Particularily if you are going to buy the more expensive Amtico.

It is supposed to last a lifetime however!

We fitted project floors in our new kitchen, same idea as both and started from a couple of guys from amtico if I recall. We would have fitted either of the others but didn't find exactly what we wanted in them, so we mixed this with amtico insert strips. I know a guy in aberdeen who might be able to help, i'm doing this on my phone so i'll try and ping it to you, if it doesn't work send me a message as a reminder and i'll do it when I get home.

A tip on Karndean - make sure you see big samples (the standard seems to be 2' squares in store, try to borrow some shortlisted options to place in the home).
My experience was that some were superb, others a bit pants and looked like the vinyl tiles they are. There are also effects (like chamfering on the wooden staves) that you can't see in the brochure or colour swatches. The same also applies for the 'grouting' and other feature strips, which may not look as good in the flesh.
