Just moved to a house heated with gasoil. Costs about 50p per litre. The boiler is a floor-standing beast, nearly 30 years old.

Oddly there is also a gas supply which terminates just outside the back door. I am considering upgrading the whole HW/CH to a sealed system and replacing the boiler with a wall-mounted gas system boiler.

I am assuming that it is cheaper to heat a house with gas rather than gasoil - is this correct? Cheers.

I don't know about running costs ,

but if there was a choice between mains gas and oil , I would go for mains gas every time just for saleability of the house .

ps. you shouldnt be paying anywhere near 50p a litre at the present .

I doubt if there would be much in it to be honest.

After using oil for the last 16 years I'm quite happy about the cost. I'd guess that an older 4 bedroomed house would use about 2-2.5K litres of oil per year for heating and H/W. At around 36p/l that would work out at about £720 - £900 p.a. No idea what gas costs these days but one thing is for sure you don't get the 'fiscal lag' effect with oil suppliers as you do with gas. The moment the market price moves the oil price moves unlike gas - up or down. Just choose your moment to buy and top up accordingly - 500l if the price is too high, a full tank if it's at a low.

Interesting - fewer grasping privatised monopolies in the middle?

That's the way it would seem. Where gas is not available then there are always 4 or 5 oil suppliers who compete quite vigorously plus consortia are set up amongst consumers to increase buying power i.e a tanker load of oil to 10 properties in the same area so the cost of delivery is minimised.

I'd go for mains gas. More choice of boiler, better availabilty of parts, higher availability of qualified engineers to work on them. Plus you can't run out of mains gas.
