Does anyone here have a robot vacuum cleaner, for example a Roomba?

I'm thinking of getting one but would like some opinions first...

I have got 2 of the critters one upstairs (iRobot 530) and one downstairs (560) and reckon they are ace.

It won't replace a normal vacuum as there are areas it won't get to, nor does it have the suction power either, it is only running from a battery after all.
They also don't do the stairs either.

What it is good at is keeping the dirt levels down (especially if you have a pet) as I have mine scheduled to come out each day at noon while I am at work.
Downstairs is laminate flooring and upstairs is carpet, both done equally as well.
Once a week I clean out the bins/filter and clean the brushes.

Once a month I strip it down and give it a good clean which takes about 15 mins.
This regular maintenance is essential as you can get foreign object build up in the gearbox if not cleaned very often.
You will see a lot of reports about the robot stopping or regularly complaining about dirt even when clean.
This is due to a lack of maintenance, striping the gearbox down and pulling out all the hair and crap out will get it going again.

I have had mine for nearly 2 years, still on the original batteries and brushes, not had to replace anything yet except for the filters and side brushes.

One of the top 5 things I have ever bought smile

Thanks hilly.

I was keen initially, but was a bit put off by the reports of failures. Is it worth the extra to get one with a scheduling function?

The scheduler is a very useful feature as it can be programmed to come out when you are not there.

iRobot models 555 and above have the scheduler, but cost more.
However the 530 can be programmed with a schedule using a laptop if you know what you are doing smile

Not seen one in action personally, but good for a source of amusement amongst our feline friends apparently.
