Where to live - Winchester area?

I live in Swindon and commute daily to Farnborough in Hampshire. I have been doing this for 15 years daily.
Im looking to go closer to work to save my commute and also to give my family a better prospect in life. TBH - Swindon doesn't seem like a great place to live and work - jobs are in short supply here. Mrs Ray Singh is looking for a job in a hospital or pharma company and in Swindon there is only two.
Areas around Farnborough are very mixed bag, some very expensive i.e. Fleet, Virgina water, Camberley etc and some not so nice places i.e Aldershot, Blackwater etc...
Looking at the map, Winchester seems a nice place to live - quite rural and not far from Farnborough (30-40 mins commute) rather than my current 1hr 15mins. Southampton isnt far and its on a mainline to London which is less expensive than the rail service from Swindon to London.
Whats this area like? Any areas to avoid? Or perhaps anywhere else anyone can recommend?
