Had a plumber round at weekend to give me a quote for a central heating new system - radiators and boiler.

But do quotes normally include them taking away the old stuff and claiming scrap value??
Just that I have quite an old system which includes a very large copper primatic tank and some huge radiators which I imagine would have some value when scrapped. So I was thinking of telling them to leave it all in the garden and I'll dispose of it and make a bit of cash.

Fair enough - just forgot to mention it when he came on Saturday.
He's due to drop the quote in tonight so I'll have a word.

Although if the quote says "remove dispose of old tank and radiators" does that mean you MUST let them (contractually), or is that just their obligation to do so?

If it says that, and you then say "I'll get rid of all that old copper" can they claim the scap value back? I would think not.

It not a big deal really, and I'm not going to fall out with them over it (who ever does the job that it) but was just wondering it there's a particular etiquette in these sort of things.

Really old Radiators can be worth money, ive seen them for £90 each at reclimation yards, I presume for people wanting to do period property.

Rads will be worth bugger all, copper can be £3K a ton when prices are good. Prices vary wildly from place to place.

I'd let them take the rads and ask to keep the copper.

Last year I was helping a mate weigh in a load of scrap stainless steel cabinets from his business.

We followed a plumbers van into the yard.

The plumber then started unloading all the brand new copper pipe from the top of his van, and then the scrap stuff from inside his van.

Obviously he had been given the correct amount of new pipe for the job, but had left as much of the old pipe in situ as he could ( something for you to watch)and had weighed in new and old pipe for scrap.

Such a waste of new pipe and it all seemed a bit "pikey" to me.

And then we were handed a load of folding for our scrap cabinets. Hells bells. Kerching!

Last week I weighed in a couple of old cats from a LS400......Its addictive I tells ya.

Cheers,

Tony

I expect they were refering to cast iron 'Hospital' rads.
